Sedation Dentistry – Not Just for Scaredy Cats
You might have heard about sedation dentistry helping people with dental anxiety get through their dental appointments comfortably and worry-free. It is true that sedation dentistry’s primary function is to help people who have a fear of the dentist obtain the dental treatment that they need to stay healthy. Otherwise, many fearful patients simply avoid the dentist altogether and their oral health suffers as a consequence.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
What you might not know, however, is that sedation dentistry also helps patients achieve better results in a few other areas. If you have a strong gag reflex, you probably know that having dental impressions or other treatments can be difficult and embarrassing. Sedation allows us to perform necessary procedures while calming your gag reflex and allowing you to relax. Many patients say they don’t know how they got through treatment without it.
If you have a large treatment plan in the future, such as a full mouth reconstruction or a smile makeover, you could benefit from sedation dentistry because it will help you to relax and lose track of time during your treatment. This allows you to have more work done without having an awareness of being in the dental chair for too long. Sedation dentistry helps you to lose track of time and makes treatment seem faster.
We offer three types of sedation for our patients: nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation (a prescribed pill), and IV sedation. Both nitrous oxide and IV sedation can be adjusted to ensure your comfort during treatment. Oral conscious sedation is a pill that you will take one hour prior to your appointment time.
The type of sedation that will work best for you depends upon your situation, the treatments you are planning, and your reasons for wanting sedation. A consultation in our office will help us to determine the solution that is best for you.
